Sundeep is a quite common name in Punjab (and also Haryana), and like most Punjabi names it's gender neutral!
It means either "light of the sun"...sunshine if you will, or the enlightened lamp. I prefer the former.
My parents followed the Sikh naming tradition whereby the first initial of the name is selected by the Guru's blessing. The tradition has the Granthi (Sikh who recites the prayers at the gurdwara), selecting and reading a random verse from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. For me, the 'sassa' or 'S' in Gurmukhi, was the first letter of the first word in the hukkam. My parents added the suffix 'deep' and the rest is history. FYI: the Hans surname is also Punjabi:)
