I am named after the Moorish Science Temple of America, a religion my father was raised in. Moorish influence can also be found in Spain. A major part of Spain’s immense cultural richness came from the Moorish conquerors, the Muslims and Arabs who conquered parts of Spain in the 8th century lived there for over 800 years! Who were the Moors? The term refers to Muslims living in Europe. Back then, the term “Moor” was also used to describe a dark-skinned person. (i.e. Othello in Shakespeare)
The Moorish Science Temple of America is an American religion founded in the early 20th century. It is based on the premise that African Americans are descendants of the Moabites and thus are "Moorish" by nationality. The religion combines elements of major traditions to develop a message of personal transformation through historical education, racial pride, and spiritual uplift. These religious doctrines were also intended to provide African Americans with a sense of identity in the world and to promote civic involvement.
