Just popular in the 60s I guess. I dislike my name because I pronounce it London-fashion without the 't' . I do try to pronounce it with the 't' when introducing myself or folk can get confused.
It comes from the Latin name Martinus, which is a late derived form of the name of the Roman god Mars, the protective godhead of the Latins, and therefore the god of war. So, to be honest, it couldn't really be less appropriate
I prefer it to either of my other given names 'Ronald' which was dropped in favour of 'John' when I was adopted. I dislike both intensely (sorry if you are called either).
